With a new perspective on the age-old tale of Oz, Wicked is based on the novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.
Taking a deep dive into Wicked reveals the history behind Oz’s most iconic witches, leaving audiences around America mesmerized by this riveting story. The unlikely yet unique friendship between Elphaba and Glinda encourages the debate over “good vs. evil”. Elphaba, the hated Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, turns out to be a surprisingly sympathetic and relatable character.
Featuring a score of spectacular songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular,” the musical delivers its powerful message in a manner that leaves viewers captivated and inspired.
The musical premiered in San Francisco in 2003 before making its way to Broadway later that year. Since its debut, the musical has gone onto to be one of the highest grossing musicals of all time! The production has clocked up over $1 billion in ticket sales and broke box office records worldwide.
Wicked has also won a couple awards, including 3 Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, and a Grammy.
