Wicked at Belk Theater

Stephen Schartz’s genius and aptitude breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to unadulterated Broadway enchantment charm. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into smash-hit Wicked, which comes to Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center for the fall playbill. 

Wicked cleverly combines governmental subjects, unconventional heroes, and improbable love within a number of catchy showtunes, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.

The story

The tale follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the highly regarded Shiz University, where she bunks with social butterfly Galinda. The two polar opposites don't take to each other at first but soon become fond of each other. 

After a while, things go downhill when Elphaba notices nefarious acts against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba seek the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A let-down Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind. 

Meanwhile, Galinda marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba returns and accidently earns Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love blossom unburdened, or will Elphaba’s mission for justice push Fiyero away, and destroy her?

History & Awards

Wicked opened its first live performance in 2003 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its influence spread, it broke into new locations year after year, earning international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its capacity to draw audiences also inspired Hollywood producers to release a two-part motion picture based on the Broadway show, that hit cinemas in November 2024.

Wicked scored numerous awards during its heyday in the 2000s, including 2 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, three Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album.
