Wicked at Belk Theater

Stephen Schartz’s ingenuity and talent breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to pure Broadway enchantment charm. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into Broadway-blockbuster Wicked, which comes to Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center for the fall playbill. 

Wicked cleverly combines bureaucratic criticisms, unconventional heroes, and unexpected tenderness within a medley of catchy tracks, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.

The story

The story follows Elphaba, the adulterine daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the esteemed Shiz University, where she bunks with social butterfly Galinda. The two polar opposites don't take to each other at first but soon befriend. 

Unfortunately, things go downhill when Elphaba notices heinous crimes against the Animals, a sentient race often tormented by persecution. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A disillusioned Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving everything else behind. 

Meanwhile, Galinda climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an socialite lifestyle. Elphaba returns and accidently wins Fiyero’s eye as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love grow unburdened, or will Elphaba’s mission for justice push Fiyero away, and ruin her?

Production

Wicked kicked off its first live performance in 2003 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new locations year after year, achieving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its potential to draw audiences also motivated Hollywood to make a movie based on the Broadway show, that hit cinemas in November 2024.

Wicked scored numerous awards during its prime in the 2000s, including 2 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, 3 Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album.
