The crowd gets to feel the power of women with an engaging musical and contemporary pop music.
Based on the many marriages of King Henry VIII, Six tells the tale of the King's six wives. Developed by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, Six presents the tale as a singing competition in which each of the ladies must tell their stories to win. The viewers watch as each wife regains their own identity.
The play begins as each woman announces themselves through a song. Only the wife who endured the most can win the title of the band's lead singer. Despite fighting among themselves, the brides finally realize they can no longer let this man define them. And by the conclusion they sing together as a cohesive band.
The musical first premiered in 2017, but Belk Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center now offers the tour showing. Critics love the show's innovation and dynamic advocacy. Fans love the astounding music, the message, and the excitement that the play inspires.

"Six" is the story of the lives of the wives of King Henry VIII, who was an infamous king of England in the early 1500s. During his 4 decades as king, he married 6 times. His demands to annul his first marriage led to the separation of the Church of England from papal authority. Many people probably know the story of Henry VIII. However, you may not know the story of his six wives. That’s where "Six" picks up.
The musical focuses on the story of these six queens as they recount their individual experiences with the king. The queens compete for who had the worst experience in living with the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, infidelity, and even beheadings in a way that makes you laugh while also touching your heart. There is a contemporary twist on the story by incorporating a dating app in a hilarious way.
Eventually, they realize that fighting over who had the most awful experience with Henry VIII is not helpful. They eventually decide to think about how Henry VIII took their individuality. They are not just the six wives of a terrible king - they have their own strengths that deserve celebrating. The Six eventually come together to write new endings to their stories. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by imagining what their lives could have been like without meeting Henry VIII.
