Synopsis

Wicked is a Broadway smash hit production that follows the adventures of Elphaba and Glinda. These two young women become the unlikeliest of friends while fulfilling their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. The story of Wicked takes place before Dorothy begins her journey in the magical Land of Oz, and includes multiple references to the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s 1930 technicolor triumph, The Wizard of Oz.

In the musical, Elphaba is rejected from society for her emerald-colored skin, while Glinda is power-hungry for popularity. Their iconic friendship is put to the test by their different personalities, clash over a love interest, and Elphaba’s strife against the Wizard’s corrupt government. When Elphaba discovers the corruption in the land of Oz, she is dubbed the Wicked Witch. Meanwhile, Glinda’s need for popularity makes her power hungry. Wicked explores everything from discrimination, corruption, and prejudice right through to sisterhood and resilience.

Creative Team

Mary Kate Morrissey assumes the role of Elphaba, this time transferring from standby to full time. All the while, Alexandra Socha is Glinda, the Tony Award winner Donna McKechnie is Madame Morrible, Natalie Ortega is Nessarose, and Brad Oscar is the Wizard. What’s more, continuing Wicked cast members include the skilled Jordan Litz as Fiyero, Jake Pedersen as Boq, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond.

The visionary creative team includes Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Book by Winnie Holzman, Choreography by Wayne Cilento, Set Designer by Eugene Lee, Costume Design by Susan Hilferty, Lighting Design by Kenneth Posner, and Sound Design by Tony Meola.

The popular musical production of Wicked has absolutely cleaned up the Tony Awards. Nominated for a whopping 10 awards, the Broadway hit clinched Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel), Best Scenic Design, as well as Best Costume Design. Wicked was just as successful at the Drama Desk Awards, taking home seven coveted awards, including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical, Outstanding Orchestrations, Outstanding Set Design, and Outstanding Costume Design. And that’s not all, Wicked also snagged an impressive 10 Outer Critics Circle Awards, as well as an impressive Grammy Award for the Best Musical Show Album Award for the original cast recording.

Wicked opened its doors on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre over twenty years ago. Landing on the 30th October 2003, the original star-studded cast included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. Wicked is also happy to announce that it’s making its way to the silver screen with a two part movie adaptation.

Review

“This musical is full of glitz and is, in many ways, a big Broadway spectacular; it is also a charming story with a wonderfully catchy score. Wicked is satisfying in a sparkly way, and also in a storytelling way. And it spans demographics. You don’t really need to have a great knowledge of The Wizard of Oz, or really a great grasp of the English language to enjoy the experience. I have to imagine this crossing of international borders is one of the reasons Wicked remains such a must-see. Tickets are still hard to come by and the front-row ticket lottery always draws a massive crowd.” – Theatre Is Easy
